The Instructor
I'm the person behind Green Hat Grey Man. I've spent over a decade in the field — not behind a desk theorizing about survival, but actually doing it. Sleeping rough, navigating without GPS, building fire in the rain, and keeping people alive when things went wrong.
This site exists because most survival content online is either dangerously wrong or designed to sell you gear you don't need. I built Green Hat Grey Man to fix that.
Start LearningHow I Think
Don't stand out. Don't draw attention. The most prepared person in the room is rarely the one who looks the part. Blend in, stay aware, and act when it counts.
Gear fails. Skills don't. I'll always recommend the right tools, but a $10 knife in trained hands beats a $300 blade in untrained ones. Build the person first.
I'm not interested in fantasy scenarios or military cosplay. I teach real skills for real situations — power outages, natural disasters, getting lost, and everything in between.
"The field is the only classroom that matters."
The Journey
I grew up in rural northeast Georgia where hunting and fishing wasn't just recreation — it was a way of life and a means of survival. While most of my friends were at home playing video games, I was out in the woods honing my craft or down at the river.
Enlisted into the Army as an 18X — the Special Forces Candidate pipeline. The beginning of a decade of training and operating at the highest level.
Graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course and was assigned to 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne).
Deployed twice to AFRICOM in support of combat operations against terrorist groups in the region. Real-world application of every skill I had built.
Worked as a Maritime Course Instructor, passing hard-won knowledge to the next generation of operators before leaving active duty in 2023.
Launched Green Hat Grey Man to help provide people with the skills, knowledge, and gear I've learned and used to survive most situations. The same standard — now accessible to everyone.
The Mission
"To give every serious person the knowledge they need to protect themselves and the people they care about — without the fluff, the fantasy, or the fear-mongering."
